March Madness Classics: 2004 Final Four UConn vs. Duke

The 2004 Connecticut Huskies were the class of college basketball. UConn rolled through everyone, cruising to a 24-6 regular season record and demolishing its first four NCAA Tournament opponents by an average of 17.5 points per game. The Huskies appeared to be on their way to a championship coronation in San Antonio, until then they ran into top-seeded Duke…and the refs.

National Player of the Year candidate Emeka Okafor picked up two fouls in the game’s first three minutes and, per Jim Calhoun’s rigid policy, was forced to sit for the rest of the first half. Duke took control of the game, going on a 32-11 run and building as much as an 11-point lead. But then, in true championship fashion, UConn stormed back.

Led by the clutch Rashad Anderson and the indomitable Okafor, the Huskies showed everyone that they were indeed the class of college hoops in 2004. It was a finish that Connecticut fans will never forget, and now, it’s a March Madness Classic.
